Imagine that you are boarding an airplane for a business trip. Your flight attendant casually mentions that the pilot has never actually flown an aircraft, but he has talked to a number of real pilots, engaged in flight simulations and even written numerous articles and white papers on aviation. Most of us would immediately leave the plane and rebook our flight.
Ironically, many ‘experts’ who are offering advice and counsel on
business retention and expansion
have little or no direct experience actually doing it. Academic research, white papers and theoretical discussions acknowledged, there is no substitute for actual experience.
In Outliers-The Story of Success, author Malcolm Gladwell asserts “the 10,000 hour rule is a definite key in success.” Gladwell contends that the time threshold of 10,000 hours of experience is necessary for proficiency in any endeavor.
